According to a Theban papyrus
written in 1870 BC, the Egyptians fed and healed their children with honey. Hippocrates,
the father of Western medicine, used honey in many different preparations and Pliny the
Elder recommended it at the beginning of the first millenium for external use, in the
treatment of wounds.The
products of the hive
-
honey, royal
jelly, pollen, wax, propolis and bee venom
- have always been used for medical
purposes.

They were attributed numerous
therapeutic powers, often linked to spiritual and sacred values. Today's science weighs
the pros and cons. The scientific research that began a few decades ago and recent
experiments in hospitals in Europe, the USA, and especially the Far East and China have
revealed
unquestionable therapeutic effects
that pave the way towards new
medical research, and confer an important place to
apitherapy
Apitherapy
among the alternative therapies that supplement modern medicine.

Honey :
Besides its energetic and nutritional benefits,
honey
has therapeutic qualities for many bodily functions; it is
advised in cases of :
-
asthenia
all degrees (state of
physical, phychological or physical tiredness).
-
anorexia
(lack of appetite),
-
assimilation disorders and digestive problems.
-
loss of weight
and states of
undernourishment of all kinds (especially in children),
-
of
constitutional deficiencies
,
-
and states occuring from
various
deficiencies
(growth deficiency or underweightness).
The antibacterial substances it contains make it
appropriate for certain
ENT affections
(laryngitis, coughs) and
intestinal or kidney diseases. In external use, its
healing power
on
wounds, injuries and skin troubles has been scientifically demonstrated and used in
medical treatment. (The research by Professor Descottes, head of surgery at Limoges
University Hospital, France, has had good results).

Pollen :
Because of its antibacterial action and its vegetable
protein content,
pollen
is recommended for sportsmen, convalescents
and senior citizens. It helps to regulate intestinal functions, as well as having an
antianaemic and balancing effect on the nervous system. It is particularly effective on
the
digestive
system,
the neurophysical
system
(stimulating and anti-depressing action) and the
metabolism in general
(growth regulator, anti-ageing action, states of undernourishment).

Royal jelly:
Royal jelly
, a substance rich in
amino-acids, trace elements and vitamins, has been tried and tested in stringent clinical
experiments. Its therapeutic qualities can be summed up as follows: it is
stimulating,
invigorating and exhilarating
; it
restabilizes
(a positive
effect on the nerves) and generally
revitalizes
. Taken as a treatment, it
induces an improvement in energy, a feeling of euphoria and can even restore the appetite.
It stimulates the production of red cells (action on anaemia), has a strong antibiotic
action (anti-infective), acts in the neuro-psychic domain (neurasthenia, anxious states,
minor depressive states), in the dermatological domain (action on some skin troubles) and on
the cardiovascular and circulatory systems (anaemias, low blood pressure,
arteriosclerosis).

Propolis :
Many experiments have demonstrated
the
bactericidal, anti-fungal, anćsthetic and healing proprieties
of
propolis
. It is useful as an antibiotic supplement (it inhibits
bacterial growth). Its action against the effects of certain viral infections(herpes) has
also been demonstrated. In
dermatology
, the healing effects of
preparations containing propolis on wounds and tissue regeneration have been known for a
very long time (second-degree burns, eczema). Its antioxidant qualities and its action on
the free radicals responsible for the cellular ageing process are put to work in
dermo-cosmetology
.
It is also used against tooth decay and paradonpathies (antibacterial and anaesthetizing
properties).

Bee venom :
Although bee venom can cause painful reactions or even
allergies, it is also used successfully as
a medicine against rheumatic pain
(muscular rheumatism, lumbago, torticollis), rheumatic neuralgia (sciatica), and
rheumatoid arthritis. Bee venom therapy is used in specialist private hospitals in Europe
and the United States and many types of treatment are currently on trial.
